🇫🇷 Why We Built This Distinctive French-Inspired Luxury Cabin in Illinois
We created The French Cabin to honor the rich history and lasting cultural legacy of France in southern Illinois. This luxurious retreat offers more than comfort, it reflects a story deeply rooted in the land around us.
📜 A Hidden Chapter of French Colonial History in Illinois
From the 1670s to 1763, France governed the Illinois Country, a vast region that stretched from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. At the time, it served as a crucial connection between French Canada and Louisiana.
However, after the French and Indian War ended in 1763, France ceded all lands east of the Mississippi to Britain. Although French control ended, the culture and influence remained. Many French settlers stayed. Others crossed the river into what is now Missouri, where their communities continued to grow.
A Cabin Inspired by the Bolduc House in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri
To fully embrace the French influenced legacy, we turned to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, just an hour’s drive from Rocky Comfort Cabins. This town is home to the Bolduc House, a classic example of French colonial architecture built in 1792.
We chose to model The French Cabin after this historic structure. As a result, our cabin captures the elegance and charm of 18th-century French design, while blending in modern luxury, warmth, and comfort. It’s history you can feel the moment you walk through the door.
French Influence Still Surrounds Us Today
Even today, you can see traces of French heritage all around. For example, many towns and landmarks in the region carry French names that speak to this deep cultural history.
On both sides of the Mississippi, you’ll find:
-
Cape Girardeau
-
St. Louis
-
St. Francois Mountains
-
Fort de Chartres
-
Prairie du Rocher
-
Dubois, Du Quoin, Belle Rive
-
Beaucoup Creek, Bourbonnais, Cache River, Fort Massac, Vergennes
These names remind us of the lasting mark France left behind, in both culture and community.

Rocky Comfort Cabins –
This was our 8th year returning to the wonderful cabins! As always, this trip didn’t disappoint. We were able to see many birds, and squirrels. We love the escape from the everyday world that allows you to relax and enjoy the beautiful nature around us.
It also allows us to connect with each other and no distractions. A piece of me is always here, and we will see you again next year.

A weekend retreat away from concrete and kids and traffic and the noise of life was delivered to us with stunning accommodations in this Creole House. The cabin was very well thought out with just the perfect touches everywhere from the linens, kitchen furnishings, grill, fireplace and yes, we braved the hot tub despite the 17 degree nights! Giant City State Park had a great couple trails to get lost in. We even bundled up and headed to Garden of the Gods with picnic in tow. Well worth the trip! But mostly enjoyed going to Blue Sky and listening to the spanish guitar player and then walking back here to the comfort here. You all have thought of everything! Best weekend ever!

We recently spent 3 days in the Creole House at Rocky Comfort Cabins. The accommodations were fabulous and we will definitely return for another stay. It was so clean, furnished with every condiment and anything you might need. The setting gave you privacy along with great scenery.

Our “new” favorite place and only a couple hours from home! My husband and I stayed at the Creole House in early March.. We absolutely loved everything about it! In the mornings we sat out on the East side of the wrap around porch with our coffee in the evening we sat on the West side enjoying wine and the sunset! The scenery was beautiful and so peaceful. We went hiking and I loved that we could see so much without the leaves on the trees! Enjoyed the hot tub, and grilling out as well as Blue Sky Vineyard. We had the pleasure of visiting with Ed (The owner) . He can tell you everything you need to know about the Shawnee Hills. We hope to meet Nancy the next time we return to relax and leave our busy lives behind for a little while! Thank you Ed and Nancy for clean and comfortable accommodations😊 We highly recommend Rocky Comfort Cabins for a relaxing getaway!

Rocky Comfort Cabins far exceeded our expectations! Gorgeous cabin, very clean with luxurious bedding and towels. The kitchen had a variety of appliances, dishes, and definetly met basic pantry needs. The deck was beautiful in itself with a great grill and outside sitting area: add the view of Blue Sky’s grapes and even more amazing! Great location within the wine trail – walk to Blue Sky (short enough we carried a case of wine and glasses of sangria home!) quick drive to grassy lake (kayaking), and close to state park (hiking.) We thank Ed and Nancy for their hospitality and allowing us to enjoy this beautiful spot!

Ed and Nancy, Tina and I had a wonderful time here. 25 years ago we were married in New Orleans, so the French Cabin was the perfect place for us to celebrate our anniversary. Thank you for the WOW! moment my wife had when we turned the corner and 1st saw the cabin. It was everything to me to see that special moment. John and Tina | Illinois | May 2025
