Fireflies, Cool Creeks & Summer Nights
July and August have their own rhythm out here.
Shaded trails. Cool creeks. Late afternoon thunderstorms rolling through before the birds return to the gardens once the rain passes.
Around the cabins, the pollinator gardens begin to peak this time of year. Hummingbirds dart through the flowers, evenings stretch a little longer, and fireflies rise from the meadow and drift into the trees as the sky turns dark. Some nights, the only sounds are cicadas, tree frogs, and the crackling fire pit.
Summer out here is less about rushing around and more about slowing down long enough to notice things again.
Favorite Summer Hikes & Swimming Spots
Some of our favorite warm-weather hikes this time of year are Bell Smith Springs, Panther’s Den, Devil’s Kitchen, Ferne Clyffe, and Hutchins Creek, where shaded trails, cool flowing water, gravel bars, and deep swimming holes offer some of the best ways to cool down during the summer months.
Hutchins Creek is especially popular for swimming, wading, and creek walking during the hotter stretches of summer. If you’re planning to explore the area, Hiking with Shawn has one of the best local guides to Hutchins Creek, including swimming and wading spots.
Wineries, Small Towns & Summer Evenings
Many guests spend their days visiting local wineries, antiquing through small towns, wandering farmers markets, or finding a shady patio for lunch before heading back out to explore.
Summer weekends bring live music to many of the wineries along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, while nearby towns host evening concerts, local markets, and community events throughout the season.
On June 25, the Carbondale Sunset Concert Series will hold its third concert of the season at the new New Era Events Plaza in Carbondale, adding another fun summer evening option for guests visiting the area that week.
It is also one of our favorite times of year to enjoy the cabins themselves. Long evenings around the firepit, sunsets from the hot tub, and quiet mornings out on the wraparound gallery porch at the French Creole Cabin tend to become some of the most memorable parts of a stay.
Open Summer Dates at Rocky Comfort Cabins
Summer weekends have filled in quickly, though there are remaining openings throughout July, August, and September between The Cove, The Hollow, and the French Creole Cabin, along with weekday stays throughout the summer.
The French Creole Cabin is available June 22–26, and August 16–23 is currently the only August week through mid-November where all three cabins are available together at the same time.
For families helping students move into SIU during move-in week, August 12–16, it can be a nice chance to relax for a few days afterward. The August 16–23 opening is also a wonderful setup for a friends trip or small group getaway, with each couple or small family having their own cabin while still sharing the property together, all within walking distance of Blue Sky Vineyard.
For many guests, some of the best summer moments are the simplest ones: a cool creek after a hike, a quiet evening on the porch, or watching the sun disappear beyond the hills with a glass of wine nearby as the fireflies rise into the stars.

Pet-Friendly Cabins in Southern Illinois
The French Creole Cabin and The Cove Cabin are both dog-friendly and have hosted many trail-loving pups over the years, including our own Heidi.
Some of our favorite summer memories out here involve dogs cooling off in the creeks, exploring shaded trails, and stretching out on the porch after a long day outside.
